The Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) was introduced in Kenya in 2017 and is being implemented in phases across the country. Grade 8 students are now learning under the new CBC system. The core purpose of CBC is to nurture the talents and capabilities of individual students and transform learning in Kenya.
Under CBC, students undergo formative assessments throughout the learning process. The curriculum emphasizes values, skills and competencies rather than just memorizing content. Students are expected to apply their knowledge and skills to real-life situations. Critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and collaboration are key skills developed under CBC.
